Cores for Casting the New Compound

Single core for the dovetail in the topslide.

Double core is for the two sides of the dovetail on the topslide base.

The outline of the single core is milled with a vertical cut.

The core box mounted at 30 degrees on an angle table. The angle for one dovetail is cut and then the box is flipped around so that the opposite dovetail can be cut. Then the core boxes are given several coats of shellac so that there is a smooth finish to permit easy withdrawal of the cores.

Sodium silicate cores for the dovetails of the compound. They don't eliminate machining but they cut down the amount of metal that has to be removed. The downside is that sand inclusions in the corners of the dovetail can eat a dovetail cutter very quickly.
